After the 2 spies returned from Jerico, Isreal moved closer to river Jordan and then cross it when God, miraculously, drains a section of the river.
The Israelites prepare to cross the Jordan
Purpose daily to purify yourself of all unholiness to see God doing amazing things in your life.
The Israelites moved from Shittim towards the Jordan and camped near the river for 3 days. The officers then instructed the people that they were to follow the ark of the covenant when they saw it being carried by the priests. They were to keep a distance between themselves and the Ark. This distance was to allow them to be lead by the Ark.
Joshua told the people to purify themselves and the camp from anything unholy because God was going to do something amazing. He then commanded the priest to take up the Ark and go before the people and the priests did so.
To continually walk with Jesus Christ and to see the power of the Holy Spirit in our lives we are to continuously seek to be holy. We are to daily pray to God to reveal to us areas of unholiness and repent.
God promises to magnify Joshua and Joshua magnifies God
Everything that God does for us is ultimately for His own glory.
God told Joshua that He would start to make Joshua great in the eyes of all Israel so that the Israelites would have the same confidence in Joshua’s leadership as they had in Moses’. God then told Joshua to tell the priests that were to carry the Ark that when they got to the edge of the Jordan, they were to stand still.
Even though the sign was to give the Israelites confidence in Joshua’s leadership, Joshua gave glory to God. He told the Israelites that the sign was to let them know that God was present among them and that He would drive out the Canaanites, Hittites, Hivites, Perizzites, Girgashites, Amorites and Jebusites from before the Israelites.
Joshua told the people to watch as the Ark was being carried before them across the Jordan. A man from each of the twelve tribes of Israel was to be selected. Joshua went on and told the people that when the feet of the priests touched the water, the water would be stopped upstream and the water would dry out downstream.
God promised to make Joshua as great as Moses and Joshua understood that this was not an end in itself. God had chosen Joshua to lead the Israelites and every blessing towards Joshua was to help him achieve this.
The Israelites cross the Jordan
For all the promises of God in Him are yes, and in Him Amen, to the glory of God by us. (2 Cor 1:20)
The people then broke camp and the priest carrying the Ark when before them. It was the time of harvest and so the Jordan was full. When the priests entered the edges of the river the water was stopped upstream and the river dried up downstream so that the people were able to cross the Jordan. The priest stood in the drained part in the middle of the river until all the Israelites had crossed.
