God to destroy all flesh except for Noah (Genesis 6:1‐22)

The aim of this passage is to cause us to learn how humanity became completely corrupted except for Noah, God’s decision to destroy all flesh and how God was to save Noah from the destruction.

Humanities it totally corrupted and God purposed to destroy all flesh (Gen6:1-7)

God’s destruction of the world is only deferred by the presence of righteous people on earth.

The population of humans increased and sons of God, righteous men, married indiscriminately. It didn’t matter whether the women they married were unrighteous. All that mattered was that they were beautiful. The offsprings of this union between the righteous and unrighteous were mighty men of renown.

Following this indiscriminate marriage, the whole of humanity became corrupt. The values of the righteous were replaced by the values of the unrighteous as they continued to interact. God saw that the desires and thoughts of all men were unendingly evil and this grieved God deeply. So He decreed that His Spirit would only remain with humans for 120 years more. He determined that He would destroy the whole of humanity and other animals because humanities evil existence was grieving to Him.

In Mat 5:13-16 Jesus said, “You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people’s feet. You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.” We as Christians are the one to influence the world and not the other way round. In situations where there is a great threat that our values being corrupted by the world, then we need to separate ourselves. We need to be willing to give up movies, music, relationships and jobs that would lead us to evil.

In what ways are you influenced by the world rather than the Holy Spirit? How can you pray for help in these areas?

Noah found grace in God’s eyes (Gen 6:8-13)

It is only God’s grace that allows us to live righteous lives.

Noah, however, found favor in God’s eyes. He was righteous and innocent of wrongdoing. He walked with God. He had 3 sons: Shem, Ham, and Japheth. God spoke to Noah and told him that He would destroy the whole of humanity because they had filled the earth with violence.

I believe that it is purposeful that it is stated that Noah found grace in God’s eyes and then that he was righteous and innocent. The order is important. It is only because God looked at him with favor that Noah was able to live the perfect life that he lived.  In Titus 3:4 we read, ”

In Titus 3:4 we read, “But when the goodness and loving kindness of God our Savior appeared, he saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit” It is only by God’s mercy and grace that we can be separated from sin. Without grace, all our efforts to be good will be worthless

How has God’s grace led you to live a life of righteousness?

God instruct Noah to build an ark to save himself, his family and a pair of each of the animal species (Gen 6:14-22)

God is capable and willing to save His elect from destruction with the rest of the world.

God said He would bring a flood to destroy everything that breathed. He said that He would establish a covenant with Noah and preserve Noah, his wife, his sons and their wives. God instructed Noah to build an ark from wood and waterproof it on the inside and outside. It would be 137 meters long, 22.9 meters wide, and 13.7 meters high. It would have 3 stories, and a door on its side. It would also have a roof or opening that was 1 cubit wide. Noah was instructed to bring a pair, male and female, of all animals into the ark to save them. He was also to bring in all types of food for his family and the animals to feed on. Noah did all that he was commanded to do.

2 Peter 2:9 reads, “then the Lord knows how to rescue the godly from trials, and to keep the unrighteous under punishment until the day of judgment” He had a way to preserve Noah, he took Enoch out of the world, saved Lot when He destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah and He will save the righteous from the time of tribulation that is coming.

How does God’s ability and willingness to save those that He chooses to make you feel about the coming judgment?
