Israel defeated by Ai because of the sin of Achan (Joshua 7:1‐26)

The aim of this passage is to cause us to understand the consequences of the sin of Achan on himself and on Israel as a whole.

Israel sins and because of it is defeated by the people Ai (Jos 7:1-12)

God can not actively be present is an environment that has sin.

The people of Israel sinned and God was angry at them. A man named Achan had taken for himself from Jericho some of the things that were to be destroyed or devoted to God.

Joshua sent men to spy out Ai and when these men returned they recommended that only 2 or 3 thousand men could take the city.  When 3 thousand men were sent to Ai, they were defeated and fled. 36 men were killed and the people of Israel dispaired. Joshua and the elders of Israel fell before the ark in mourning. He lamented to God about the defeat that they had experienced.  God told Joshua to stop his lamenting and that Israel had sinned. They had become destined for destruction and God could no longer be with them unless they removed the stolen things from them.

Psalms 5:4-6  For you are not a God who delights in wickedness; evil may not dwell with you. The boastful shall not stand before your eyes; you hate all evildoers. You destroy those who speak lies; the LORD abhors the bloodthirsty and deceitful man.

1 John 1:6-7  If we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin.

What sins appear so small that you have come to think that God is okey with?

Achan is identified and he and all he has are burnt (Jos 7:13-26)

God does not take sin lightly and neither should we.

God instructed Joshua to tell the people to prepare themselves because they had sinned and they could not stand before their enemies in that state. Using lots the person who had sinned would be identified and this person and all that had had would be burned for their sins. Joshua then cast the lots and  Achan was eventually selected. Joshua asked Achan to confess his sins and Achan confessed that he had sinned by taking a clock, silver, and gold from Jericho and hidden them under his tent. When Joshua sent messengers to Achan’s tent, they found these items and brought them before God, Joshua and the people of Israel. Joshua and the people of Israel took Achan, all his family, his property and the things he had stolen and took him to a valley where they were stoned and burned. They made a great heap of stones where Achan died.

Matthew 5:29-30  If your right eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body be thrown into hell. And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body go into hell.

How can you take decisive action towards sin that is still present in you life?
