The aim of this passage is to cause us to understand that we can by faith in Jesus Christ we can be sure that we have been reconciled to God and that we will not face His wrath.
We have assurance that we have been reconciled to God (Rom 5:1-8)
God loved us first before we loved Him.
Since we have been justified by faith only and not by the efforts of following the law, we, through Jesus Christ, offer to God acceptable worship, with reverence and awe. Through belief in Jesus Christ, who suffered once for our sins, we have the continuous and unwarranted privilege of access to God. We find satisfaction and joy in the hope of seeing and being present in the glory of God.
We also have peace in our persecution because we know that persecution results in steadfastness in faith. Steadfastness in faith results in a godly character and a godly character gives us hope, that is to say, an assurance of our salvation.
Our hope will not result in shame because God’s love for us is proven to us by the Holy Spirit who is given to us as promised in the scriptures and by Jesus Christ. God loved us because while were dead in our sins, Jesus Christ died for us. A human being might sacrifice his life for a righteous person or maybe a good person. God, however, loved us so much that while we were sinners and completely undeserving, Jesus Christ, the Son of God, died for us.
John 15:16 You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit and that your fruit should abide, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name, he may give it to you.
What joy do you find in knowing that God loves you more than you could every love Him?
We have assurance that we will not face the wrath of God (Rom 5:9-11)
Believers in Jesus Christ will not face the wrath of God like the world will.
Now that we have found justification in the eyes of God through the death of Jesus Christ, we can be sure that we will not face the wrath of God that is being and will be visited on the world. We can be sure of this because while we were sinners and therefore, enemies of God, Jesus Christ died for us and now that we have been reconciled with God, the resurrected Christ will save us from this wrath. We can be sure of this because while we were sinners and therefore, enemies of God, Jesus Christ died for us and now that we have been reconciled with God, the resurrected Christ will save us from this wrath. Beyond this assurance, we now find satisfaction and joy in God through our Lord Jesus Christ.
Revelation 19:14-15 And the armies of heaven, arrayed in fine linen, white and pure, were following him on white horses. From his mouth comes a sharp sword with which to strike down the nations, and he will rule them with a rod of iron. He will tread the winepress of the fury of the wrath of God the Almighty.
What peace do you have from knowing you have escaped the wrath of God?
